Reeperbahn Festival 24 – 27th September 2016
It’s a people business Whichever way you look at it: People-to-people contacts are what count most in the music business. And there’s no better place to cultivate and expand these contacts than at Hamburg’s four-day Reeperbahn Festival, where for the past ten years the fusion of music, art, and conference has created an extraordinary atmosphere that attracts more visitors with each passing year. Since its launch in 2006 the Reeperbahn Festival has developed into a must-attend event for national and international music fans and music industry professionals. This is hardly surprising given the festival’s programme of more than 600 events. To begin with, there’s the line-up of over 400 live concerts featuring bands and artists from all over the world. The festival’s carefully selected mix of well-established acts and exciting newcomers has always ensured a consistently high level of quality. Over the years, Reeperbahn festivalgoers have been treated to performances by Ed Sheeran, Ben Howard, Cro, Bon Iver, Milky Chance, Kraftklub, and many others, long before they achieved their breakthroughs. A separate programme devoted to art, literature, and film rounds out the range of events for the general public. Every year more than 70 venues on and around the Reeperbahn – in clubs, bars, boats, churches, and museums – open their doors for Germany’s largest club festival. But that’s not all. In addition to being a must for scores of music fans, the four-day festival on Hamburg’s Reeperbahn has become a fixed date in the calendars of more than 3,500 international trade and professional visitors from the music and digital creative industries. And for good reason: a programme comprising more than 160 individual events – conference sessions, showcases, networking opportunities, award ceremonies, start-up pitches, and many other innovative formats – provides an ideal environment for exchange and showcases the festival as an international trade platform. And this is something the decision-makers behind NEXT haven’t failed to notice. The renowned NEXT digital conference is returning to Hamburg after six years – and it’s joining forces with the Reeperbahn Festival! But there’s more still – the festival’s anniversary year boasts many other new features: MerchMasters, a brand-new music and entertainment merchandising trade show, celebrates its premiere in 2015; “Aus Finnland!” (From Finland!) marks the first time the festival has turned the spotlight on a particular country and will include performances by new, up-andcoming Finnish artists as well as conference sessions and networking events with a focus on Finland; and a three-year partnership with the German Association of Independent Music Companies (VUT) brings the VUT Indie Days and the VIA! VUT Indie Awards, the independent music industry’s first and only critics’ awards, to the Reeperbahn. In its anniversary year the Reeperbahn Festival is more wide-ranging than ever before and continues to be just as exciting as the developments taking shape in the music and digital worlds – while providing a forum for the creative minds behind these worlds. Because – as mentioned above – in Hamburg one never forgets that “it’s a people business!
